http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=131810 --- Not an hour after my chat with Tom Williams, another driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox FCEV as part of GM Project Driveway, he leaves a message on my cell phone: When I drove up to downtown L.A. from Orange County today, I got 60 miles to the kilogram. I don't know about you, but I love that. It's the kind of excitement I'm used to hearing from truly motivated Prius owners. By any standard, the hydrogen-fueled Chevy Equinox fuel cell electric vehicle qualifies as alternative-fuel exotica, as rare and fascinating as it is expensive and impractical. You can call it the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox FCEV (FCEV as in fuel cell electric vehicle), but this is no production vehicle. Only General Motors knows what it costs to build these SUVs, but each of these prototypes is probably worth the equivalent of 10 Tesla Roadsters. For the next 72 hours, though, I'm going to drive our Chevrolet Equinox FCEV test vehicle like it's an ordinary, $30,0

Largest Real World Test of Fuel Cell Cars Celebrates One Millionth MileOver the last two years a fleet of hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicles have been test driven by everyday people. Participants in Project Driveway were given the opportunity to drive the gas-free, emissions-free Chevrolet Equinox wherever they wanted and recently reached the millionth mile mark. To celebrate the millionth mile, current and former drivers came together to share their experience and talk about the future of hydrogen. In exchange for the two months of free gas and insurance, the drivers provided feedback to engineers on the Equinox. Customer comments help the automaker improve the fuel cell experience and in some cases modify the vehicle, bringing it one step closer to reality.Several automakers have said that they will have hydrogen powered vehicles ready for market by 2015. NEW SERIES airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on HISTORY. The Maya, an ancient South American culture, predicted that time would end in a violent apocalypse on December 21, 2012. They created an elaborate astronomical calendar called The Long Count, which stops abruptly in 2012. This date, which is also the winter equinox, coincides with an incredibly rare galactic alignment that happens once every 26,000 years. What did the Mayans think would happen when their calendar ended? And were they joined by other cultures--from different parts of the world and in different centuries--all pointing to 2012 as a calamitous end time?
