Even Moderate Amounts of Soyfoods Reduce Cholesterol Levels; Promote Heart Health For the estimated one in two adult Americans with elevated cholesterol levels, there is good news: eating soy burgers, tofu, and other soyfoods is a tasty way to lower both the total amount of cholesterol in the bloodstream and the so-called "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol that leads to heart attack and stroke. The latest evidence, promoted during National Cholesterol Education Month, comes from a review of 35 high quality studies published over a ten-year period (1998-2008) where soy protein was consumed by healthy adults aged 25 to 65 years. Conducted by Arline McDonald, Ph.D., adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, this exhaustive review finds even moderate consumption of soy products -- in the range of 20 to 50 grams of soy protein daily -- reduced LDL cholesterol levels by 4 percent to 6 percent and total ...

After more than 30 years, limits on egg consumption have been lifted. A paper published this week dispels the myths around eggs and cholesterol and confirms that UK health and heart organisations have lifted the limits on eggs as there is no conclusive evidence to link their consumption with increased risk of coronary heart disease Nearly half (45%) of the UK public believe (1) they should be eating a maximum of three eggs a week – but the new paper discusses decades of evidence, concluding that the cholesterol in eggs has only a small and clinically insignificant effect on blood cholesterol and that there is no recommended limit on egg consumption for most people. The paper, published this week in the British Nutrition Foundation’s Nutrition Bulletin, reveals that the misconceptions around eggs and cholesterol largely stem from incorrect conclusions drawn from early research. In this video Dr Hilary Jones reveals more.

Millions of Americans know their cholesterol levels, but the numbers themselves don’t measure risk for heart attack or stroke. A key indicator that DOES measure risk is the number of particles which carry cholesterol in the bloodstream. Now, there’s a tool developed by LipoScience called the NMR Lipo Profile, which tells patients how many of these particles they have. Many former football players are at high risk of heart disease, because they are not as active as they once were and are not watching their diets. Several took part at a screening organized by the Living Heart Foundation, founded by former NFL Quarterback Dr. Archie Roberts. As part of their physical, they learned their particle numbers.

It’s been more than 50 years since the iconic advert involving Tony Hancock where he advised people to “go to work on an egg”. As a nation, we currently eat 28 million eggs a day – between two and three per person per week. It’s thought that myths about the need to limit the number of eggs you should eat have led to the consumption of eggs in the UK being amongst the lowest in the world. One of the biggest myths – a belief held by around HALF of the population – is that people shouldn’t eat more than three eggs a week. However, new research from a team at Surrey University published in The European Journal of Nutrition this week, shows people who ate two eggs a day and watched the other foods they ate, not only lost weight, but reduced their blood cholesterol levels too. In this video the man who headed the research team, Dr Bruce Griffin reveals more.
