Fleming later popularised the drink when he gave it its public debut in his 1953 novel, Casino Royale. In the book, Bond himself invents it in a bar, subsequently naming it to commemorate his strong feelings for Vesper Lynd - Bonds first romantic interest in the original novels.

She later created the cocktail for English comedy actor Charles Hawtrey, who asked her for something with a bit of punch in it. The first time he tasted the results of her hours of experimentation, he replied, By jove! Thats the real hanky panky! And the name stuck!
