Hundreds of people have been injured in Bangladesh, in violent clashes over proposed sexual equality between men and women. Members of the radical Islami Constitution Movement fought running battles with police after Friday prayers in Dhaka. They were outraged at the idea of women having the same inheritance rights as men. Under Sharia Law, women receive only half as much as men. Bangladesh is a predominantly Muslim, though secular state. Radicals deny wanting to disinherit women, but insist their rights must adhere to Islamic Law. Bangladesh has one of the worst records in the world for female oppression. Physical attacks are common, sometimes using sulphuric acid, as punishment for turning down proposals of marriage. Fewer than one in ten of the male attackers ever faces justice.
