Last night comedian Will Ferrell was escorted from a Pelicans – Lakers basketball game at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans after hitting a cheerleader in the face with a basketball. The whole thing was caught on camera by fans and posted to Instagram:

Luckily good guy funnyman Ferrell is not having a celebrity meltdown or midlife crisis and drunkenly interrupting a basketball game and getting himself arrested for assault. It was all part of a staged scene for a movie shoot.  Even more importantly although this scene is being shot on a basketball court we can breathe a sigh of relief that he is not filming a sequel to 2008’s Semi Pro, but a new movie called Daddy’s Home. The film also stars Mark Wahlberg and is about a divorced guy whose ex-wife re-marries someone way more uptight, he re-enters her life and wreaks havoc. I wonder if it all turns out OK in the end and they learn to love each other again.

In the scene Ferrell is supposed to be attempting a half-court shot, but instead hucks the ball directly at a cheerleaders head. Ouch!

Spoiler Alert!

The best part of all of the fan coverage on social media is confused people on Twitter who think that the incident was real. Like Will Ferrell actually went and had a breakdown at a basketball game…

Here is some fan shot footage of Will Ferrell and crew filming the scene during halftime of the real game. Hopefully for the “cheerleader” they didn’t have to do too many takes or that’s going to leave a mark.
