Val Kilmer Is Confirmed To Be Coming Back As Iceman For Top Gun 2

It’s been 32 years since the release of Top Gun, and because god forbid Hollywood come up with anything that isn’t a remake or sequel we’re getting a Top Gun 2, aka Top Gun: Maverick. While producers have been able to keep the plot of the sequel completely under wraps so far, director Joseph Kosinski told ComingSoon.net that it would be “appropriate for the times we live in.”

“It’s just a different world now, you can’t remake the first movie. It has to adapt, [but] I certainly want to re-create the experience of that movie, which gives you a front seat into the world of naval aviation and what it’s like to be in a fighter jet.”

Remember how the remake of the original Patrick Schwayze Red Dawn got rid of Russia and put us at war with North Korea? Yeah – that movie tried to be hip with the times, but the idea of North Korea invading anything other than a hot dog stand is laughable. Hopefully Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t go the same stupid route.

While Cruise teased the start of production just one week ago by posting a photo of himself back in his Top Gun uniform on Instagram…

Top Gun 2: Confirmed?

…it wasn’t until yesterday that The Wrap was able to confirm that Val Kilmer is reprising his original role via “an individual with knowledge of the production.”

“A rep for Paramount declined to comment on the casting of Kilmer, who has been spotted around the San Diego hotel the studio has been using since production began last week.”

Entertainment Weekly was then able to confirm the news, though Kilmer hasn’t come out and said anything on his own. He did make a Facebook post stating he’d been offered the film and that he accepted the role without reading the script…

…however this was back in 2015.

We probably won’t get any more concrete details until we’re closer to the release date in July 2019 – though one Twitter user apparently went to the filming site and took a video:

Hopefully that’s good enough to hold you over!
