Police arrested a 22-year-old U.C. Santa Barbara student after he was accused of attacking a pastor in his own home while wearing nothing from the waist down.
A news release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office revealed that Paul Gusman frantically knocked on the door of Father Jon-Stephen Hedges' Isla Vista home at around 2:15 am on Saturday.
When Hedges opened the door, a half-naked Gusman forced his way into the home and began assaulting the pastor, punching him at least 30 times in the face, authorities said. Hedges' wife, who was also hit on the hand by the Gusman, was able to call 911 for help.
When police arrived on the scene, they found Gusman in the front yard, likely under the influence of some type of drug, the news release indicated. He was arrested and charged with assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, residential burglary, elder abuse and dissuading a witness/victim.
Although he was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, Hedges, who works as an assistant pastor at St. Athanasius Orthodox Church and as a volunteer chaplain for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, was released later in the day.
Gusman is currently being held on a $500,000 bail and will appear in court on Thursday.
