Tyler Perry Offers Job To Cosby Star Who Was Caught Bagging Groceries At Trader Joe’s

There’s no shame in an honest day of work, but there is shame in acting like you’re better than the people around you just because you have a fancier job. And frankly, the plumbers and grocery baggers of the world are more important than the financial day traders – most people don’t own stocks, and calling Chad the Financial Planner isn’t going to fix a clogged drain. But because people can be real assholes sometimes, it’s no surprise that some started  shitting on actor Geoffrey Owens for working as a cashier at Trader Joe’s:

Owens once had a recurring role on The Cosby Show between 1985 and 1992, but since then his acting roles have been rather sporadic:

Most notably, he was fake Tiger Woods/Don Cheadle on that episode of It’s Always Sunny where Frank wants to marry a hooker.

But work isn’t constant in Hollywood; plenty of actors and actresses have to find ways to pay their bills between gigs, and sometimes those gigs aren’t exactly glamorous. Terry Crews admitted that he had to sweep floors after he played in the NFL, and Entertainment Tonight host Nischelle Turner even worked at Target to make ends meet:

Owens says that he originally took the Trader Joe’s job because he wanted “flexibility” to stay in the entertainment business, which is fair – if you can get by bagging groceries and still have time to work on your passion, then who cares? People are homeless, addicted to drugs, have zero money in savings and are starting GoFundMe pages to pay for medical bills – the real problems of the world deserve your attention, not a guy doing an honest day’s work.

And if your faith in humanity feels like it’s taken a walloping with this story, fear not – Tyler Perry, who has been plaguing Hollywood with those fucking Madea Gets A Colonoscopy movies for years, offered Owens a job on one of his shows on the OWN network:

As for whether or not Owens will take him up on his offer, he told Entertainment Tonight that while it was a generous offer, he’s a little skeptical about it:

“That was kind of cool,” Owens tells ET about the big opportunity. “I mean, that kind of sounded like he was saying, ‘Come work with me.’ I’m so, like, skeptical. Like, really? Are you actually saying come work with me? Because we’ve never worked together before. So, that’s a very, very generous thing for him to say. And we’ll see what happens with that. But, that’s encouraging.”

And while he’s thankful at the outpouring of support, Owens says that he wants to get a job based on his merit, not some photos that went viral:

“I wouldn’t mind getting auditions … but I wouldn’t feel comfortable with someone giving me a job because this happened,” he said. “I want to get a job because I’m the right person for that job.”

Overall, dude seems like a real stand-up guy – now if only the rest of the world could chill their shit and follow suit.
