A North Carolina tow truck driver refused to tow the car of a woman because of a Bernie Sanders sign she displayed in the vehicle. According to Kenneth Shupe, he “very politely” declined to help Cassandra McWade because of his political and moral beliefs.
Shupe, who owns Shupee Max Towing, told FoxCarolina he could tell that McWade was “obviously a socialist,” which led him to tell McWade to “call the government” for help in removing her vehicle.
“Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist-minded person I have not gotten paid,” Shupe said. “Every time I deal with these people I get ‘Berned’ with an ‘e’ not a ‘u’.”
As a conservative Christian, Shupe added, he supports Donald Trump for president and would not do business with Bernie Sanders supporters. “I respect their beliefs, and I hope they respect my views,” he said.
In North Carolina, business owners can decline to serve customers based on their political affiliation. “We may not like it and we may not agree with it but I don’t believe any laws were broken,” Greenville Attorney Steve Sumner said. “As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up.”
