After months…hell, YEARS of talk regarding the sequel to the cult classic Beetlejuice, Tim Burton has apparently confirmed the fact that we will be getting a followup to his 1988 film. And not only is Winona Ryder involved, but more importantly, we’ll be seeing the return of Michael Keaton as the title character. There’s so much awesome in his statement.
“The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board….”
Okay, I’ll say it. It’s showtime!
The quote comes from Showbizspy with Tim Burton allegedly going on to say…
“…this includes both Winona and Michael. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.”
It does make sense that if there’s ever going to be a Beetlejuice sequel, the time would be now considering the resurgence in Michael Keaton’s career after the success of Birdman followed by Spotlight (both Best Picture winners with Keaton as the lead in both). Right now though Tim Burton is currently working on a live action version of Dumbo for Disney as well as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children so would Beetlejuice 2 be the next film on his big plate? We shall see!
For now, I’m pretty friggin’ excited and hope the day brings even more confirmation to this story.
UPDATE: A word from Tim Burton’s PR: “I rep Tim Burton and wanted to let you know that Tim did not provide a statement to confirm Beetlejuice 2 as the movie is not in development. Tim’s focus is entirely on ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children’ and developing ‘Dumbo'”. Could this be a fakeout since the news already broke and Warner Bros along with Burton wasn’t ready for it? Only time will tell.
