Survivor hasn’t been up to much lately but got a nice chunk of exposure yesterday thanks to the Kentucky County Clerk who refused to marry two men despite it being her job (and most importantly the couple’s right) to do so. After being jailed for a few weeks for refusing to literally do what she was elected for, Kim Davis was released yesterday, and which song did she decide to use in order to celebrate at her rally? Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger. And Survivor band members are thinking of suing Davis for using their song without permission.
Normally in recent memory, we hear Eye of the Tiger in really crappy montage segments parodying it’s first use in the big Rocky III training montage but now we’re getting a dose of it at really crappy rallys in the boondocks and Survivor ain’t too happy about it.
Jim Peterik who co-wrote the famous song released this statement about the song’s use during yesterday’s ridiculous rally:
“I was very surprised and dismayed at the misuse of the song I co-wrote with Frankie Sullivan for ‘Rocky lll’. The song has motivated thousands through the years to reach beyond their limits. Its use for the release of Kim Davis does not support my views or my politics. I have contacted my publishers to make sure this usage is stopped immediately.”
You could say Jim has…the eye of the tiger right now.
Frankie Sullivan, the song’s other co-writer then took to his facebook and released his own statement confirming that the band didn’t agree to the use of their song that Kim Davis was seen balling too, which was really just unsightly.
Honestly, I can’t blame Survivor wanting to sue Kim Davis for any number of reasons, and really hope that they do. Their song is now connected to Kim Davis instead of film icon Rocky which is just really unfortunate.
