Believe it or not, the last Star Trek series (Enterprise starring the great Scott Bakula) on television ended in 2005. Not that long ago, but since then it seems Star Trek has become even more of a fan favorite with the new franchise hitting theaters and the passing of actor Leonard Nimoy. Well CBS has taken notice and thought why the hell not make more television episodes instead of just making a movie every few years. That’s right, Star Trek is coming back to television in 2017.
CBS has just announced that they will be premiering a brand new Star Trek series in January of 2017 with the rest of the series released onto their digital and VOD services which you can use for $5.99 a month. A first for any Star Trek series. It’s interesting how you can actually pick and choose which networks you’d like to watch instead of getting one of those bulk packages with 20 channels you could care less about. I mean how many cooking shows does one really need?
The big question however is will this be a new show with characters like Kirk and Spock or something completely new and different. CBS hasn’t completely divulged that information just yet although it seems like they’re leaning toward the latter. “The new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”
Frankly, I’d love an Avengers-style Star Trek where they pluck the best characters from each series. I’d love to see Worf and Bones try to get along.
