The Simpsons is not only the longest-running television show of all time, but it's getting damn good at predicting the future of America.
In 2000, they successfully predicted that Trump would run for President of the United States (not to mention, the exact same shot in which he would reveal that he's running) but that he would in fact win the Presidency. Everyone's minds were blown when people began remembering the episode, creating side by side memes depicting how spot on the show's writers were in 2015. But how the hell did they know?! Dan Greaney, the head writer for the episode "Bart to the Future" which sees The Simpsons bleak future, explained how he and the other show's writers came up with it.
Warning: If you're a Trump supporter, you probably won't like Dan's answer.
It was a warning to America. That just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was consistent with the vision of America going insane.
However it should be noted that The Simpsons' writers clearly aren't big fans of Trump themselves...or are they? Trump has been used as the butt of many jokes throughout the years. The Simpsons creator Matt Groening even admitted that Donald Trump's name was the most absurd "placeholder joke name" they could think of for various episodes, but that's not to say that they're all anti-Trumpers.
The weirder part however is that Lisa Simpson in the episode is seen taking over as President after Trump's term, giving her the title as the first female President. Something we almost saw this week. Unfortunately it's also revealed that Trump has left zero money for the country to work with, but does this mean Hillary might run again in 2020? God, I hope not.
Dan continued his explanation/prediction by saying that Trump was the only guy they could think of to move the plot in the direction the episode needed.
What we needed was for Lisa to have problems beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that’s why we had Trump be president before her.
Quick, start looking through old Simpsons episodes. Maybe they've given a winning lottery number or something we can use!
