Ryan McHenry, the creator of the “Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal” Vine memes that spread joy all over the Internet, died on Sunday after a battle with a type of bone cancer called osteosarcoma at the age of 27. The meme started when Gosling admitted his love for cereal during a Twitter Q&A for his film, Lost River.
From this, McHenry created clever Vines of Gosling avoiding spoonfuls of cereal from footage from Gosling’s more popular movies like The Notebook and Drive. I could watch his memes all the live long day. They are as hypnotizing as they are hilarious:
When Gosling learned of McHenry’s death, he took to Twitter to give a heartfelt message:
My heart goes out to all of Ryan McHenry’s family and friends. Feel very lucky to have been apart of his life in some small way.
— Ryan Gosling (@RyanGosling) May 5, 2015
It was the first time that Gosling directly addressed the popular meme. Being the super cool guy that he is, he joined Vine just to make this in honor of McHenry:
Gosling eating a spoonful of cereal as an homage to McHenry is the equivalent of pouring one out for your homies. Thanks for being such a nice dude Mr. Gosling. And thank you Mr. McHenry for making us smile. The world could use a couple more Ryans like you.
