The Academy Awards are seen to be a glitzy and formal, almost regal, event to acknowledge Hollywood royalty and their accomplishments. Occasionally, the winners get a little over zealous in their speeches and let a little swear word out. Whoops! No harm, but usually frowned upon by the censors.

After accepting his Best Actor statuette in 2012, Jean Dujardin managed to make it past the censors when he shouted in French, "If George Valentin could speak, he'd say 'Wow! Putain! Genial! Merci! Formidable!'” The swear word here is “Putain” which roughly translates to “Whore”. It a flexible word though, much like a lot of our English swear words. You can use it when you stub your toe on the edge of the coffee table or when your favorite basketball player misses a layup.
