Mark Cuban Got Fined $600,000 For Intentionally ‘Tanking’ The Dallas Mavericks

Out of all the investors on Shark Tank, Mark Cuban is the only one who goes the length to call people out on their shit and explain why they’re such turd slurpin’ idiots. Kevin will happily call them cockroaches, but Cuban will take it a step further and break down exactly why the pitch either sucks or the company is failing; sometimes even both.

And for better or for worse, Cuban’s lack of sugarcoating seems to carry through to his life outside of the shark tank as well. Since owning the Dallas Mavericks Curban has been fined over $2 million – most of it comes from criticizing the referees, however he’s about to add another $600,000 to that number due to his recent comments acknowledging how the Mavs want to “tank.”

For the uninitiated, “tanking” is where teams intentionally give younger, less experienced players more time on the court instead of experienced veterans who would give the team a better chance at winning. By losing a few extra games here and there, the Mavs worsen their overall record but improve their position for the next NBA draft – they’re currently tied for the fewest wins in the NBA.

“I’m probably not supposed to say this,” Cuban starts off with on a recent podcast with Julius Erving, “but I just had dinner with a bunch of our guys the other night. And here we are. We weren’t competing for the playoffs. I was like, ‘Look, losing is our best option.’”

“Adam would hate to be hearing that. But at least I sat down and I explained it to them. And I explained what our plans are going to be this summer, that we’re not going to tank again. This is like a year and a half of tanking. That was too brutal for me.”

To date, this is Cuban’s largest fine that he’s incurred from the NBA – back in 2002 he was charged $500,000 for criticizing former director of officials Ed Rush by saying that he wouldn’t hire Rush to manage a Dairy Queen.

As for Cuban’s response to his latest fine, he says that “I earned it. I got excited talking to Dr. J and said something I shouldn’t have.”
