Lafayette, Louisiana's Richard Gibson (58) has a really unique hobby. Instead of building model airplanes or collecting stamps, he has been holding onto his fingernail and toenail clippings since 1978.
In February of that fateful year, Richard remembers it was a manicure box which held his first collected clippings. "I started doing it again and again and then decided to see how long it would take to fill the box." Whew. He says that it took only two years to fill the manicure box, which he then upgraded to the glass jar you see in the photo. Here is where all of the clippings had been held for the past 34 years.
Richard's wife (yeah, he's married. Let that sink in single people) doesn't approve of her husban'd hobby. She asks him to hide his collection which sits proudly on a shelf in their home when guests come over. And rightfully so. Because it's insane.
"I only cut them when I break a fingernail or toenail," he said. "I don't cut them that often -- they're long." So Richard isn't only gross for collecting his nails. He's also the old guy walking around with weird long fingernails.
Lucky for Richard (I think), his collection has given him a spot in the new Ripley's Believe It Or Not book titled Reality Shock! which will be released in September. First of all, I had no idea that was even a thing still and second, people actually still have enough of an interest where a book is needed? Good Lord.
Oh, and if you're looking get a close up of that nail jar Richard has in his hand, here you go! You can thank me in the comments after you hurl up your lunch.
