Florida mailman and guy who owns a gyrocopter, Doug Hughes was a man with a plan. Hughes has been working on his attention grabbing stunt for the past two years which culminated today when he landed his “flying bicycle” on a grassy area outside of the United States Capitol Building shortly before being arrested and thankfully for him, not shot out of the sky by the Secret Service.
Aiming to draw attention to the controversial Citizens United Supreme Court decision which removed limits on how much money corporations could donate to political campaigns, Hughes wanted to deliver a letter to Congress. Typical mailman: delivering letters!
For him “going postal” means flying a gyrocopter to the Capitol!
Before he took off, Hughs spoke to The Tampa Bay Times about his eccentric plan to deliver his protest of the Citizens United decision. The newspaper in turn promptly called the Secret Service who put the capitol on lockdown. That will stop those congressmen from getting all that corporate campaign cash!
Great now the Secret Service has a gyrocopter to get drunk and fly around in.
While the stunt may seem insanely dangerous and ballsy, the mailman who I presume has had his fair shake of running away from angry dogs, wasn’t worried. Hughes seemed pretty confident about how authorities would react to the presence of his flying contraption making its way through restricted airspace.
“I don’t believe that the authorities are going to shoot down a 61-year-old mailman in a flying bicycle,” he told the Tampa Bay Times. “I don’t have any defense, okay, but I don’t believe that anybody wants to personally take responsibility for the fallout.”
Which makes sense because when a weird vehicle is flying through restricted airspace toward the US government I’m sure they will believe you at your word that you’re just a 61-year-old mailman. That’s exactly what a terrorist would say!
You can read all of his letter here, let us know how it is! He never did get it to Congress. Hopefully he gets his gyrocopter back, because that looks fun!
