Proving that indeed they are now grown up with some very grown parts, a group of child stars have found themselves embroiled in various leaked nude photo scandals. Perhaps it’s because they all share a compelling need to show the world that they’re not kids anymore, several young stars like Disney star Vanessa Hudgens and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody lead, Dylan Sprouse have taken naked selfies that have inevitably made their way onto the web. Recently, Nickelodeon’s Sam and Cat star Jennette McCurdy has now joined the illustrious leaked selfies club. On March 2, 2014, three lingerie pictures of Jennette McCurdy appeared on the internet showing off her breasts and backside. In one of the pictures, she’s wearing a black lace bra, another she’s in a pink bandeau and the one that’s gotten the most attention is the one in which Jennette is on all fours wearing a matching bra and lacy underwear.
The leaked pictures:
In her defense, the pictures are hardly a scandal since you don’t see Jennette McCurdy nude and it’s nothing anybody hasn’t seen before in a Victoria Secret’s catalog. Jennette is simply dressed in lingerie and all you really can see is how big this doll-faced actress’ breasts have become. As an actress, is it really so bad to show the world what a great rack you have? Also, you would think people would have been prepared for eventual Jennette McCurdy provocative pictures. As Jennette has evolved into a woman, she’s been known to post a sexy picture of herself now and then via social media. Perhaps since audiences feel they’ve known the Nickelodeon actress since she was 15 years old starring as best friend Sam Puckett to Miranda Cosgrove’s Carly Shay on the Nickelodeon show iCarly, it’s unsettling to see Jennette sport lacy panties. However, she looks lovely in the pictures so if you’re going to grow up and out of Nickelodeon, you might as well do so as nicely as Jennette has grown and filled out. WHAT WAS JENNETTE’S REACTION TO THE LEAKED PICTURES?
Like most twentysomethings, Jennette took to Twitter on March 3 the day the pictures leaked to apologize saying she was “ashamed.” She also stated that she knew who leaked the pictures. Her entire tweet said, “About the whole lingerie thing. They aren’t fake photos and I’m awfully sorry about that. I am very upset about it getting leaked. Yes, Andre did do it because I bashed him. Again, I am so sorry.” She ended with “Feeling ashamed” and the ashamed emoticon. The “Andre” Jennette is referring to is her former boyfriend, NBA basketball player, Andre Drummond. Drummond instantly went on the defensive and tweeted out on March 3 at 3:51pm, “For all the speculations about leaking anything, I have nothing to do with it. I’m focused on basketball. Thank you.” To which Jennette tweeted on March 4th at 10:04am, “To anyone disappointed: I sent those pics to 1 person. You can connect the dots. Shocked someone would stoop so low. I just speak w/ candor.” 6 minutes later, Jennette announced that she was taking the zen high road by tweeting out, “In related news, I’m blasting “Let It Go” on repeat.”
Jennette and Andre on a date:
The “bashing” that Jennette was talking about in her original tweet refers to a podcast interview she did with Nerdist.com. She told them that Drummond pursued a date with her via social media using the hashtag, “Woman Crush Wednesday.” A University of Connecticut star, Drummond, tweeted about his crush on Jennette every Wednesday for several months. When she discovered Drummond’s diligence, Jennette agreed to a date. Jennette admitted she soon knew she and Drummond didn’t have a connection but that she didn’t want to break up too soon since she already announced they were dating on social media, “I already posted it on Twitter so everybody knows. I just (thought I’d) ride it out for a little bit.” She said about their relationship “It only lasted like a week, it was really short,” and went on to be brutally honest saying, “My first kiss with him was after we had gone laser tagging. “I stood on a chair. I sort of went for it. But it wasn’t great. It didn’t go great. No sparks and the mouth… the shapes weren’t right.”
Sigh. Clearly, there are a couple lessons to be learned here. First, relationships that start via Twitter, live via Twitter usually will die quickly either via Twitter or some other way but it’s pretty much a guarantee they will die. Second, if you date a person for only a week, perhaps you should reserve sexy lingerie pictures for someone, say, you’ve dated for two weeks. Maybe wait even a month.
DID THE LEAKED PHOTOS AFFECT JENNETTE’S CAREER?
In April, a month after the lingerie pictures leaked, the New York Daily News reported that because of the photos, Nickelodeon was on the brink of canceling “Sam & Cat” their hit show in which Jennette reprised her iCarly character Sam. She co-starred with Ariana Grande who played Cat Valentine, a character from “Victorious,” another popular Nick show. Despite the popularity of “Sam & Cat,” the network hadn’t yet renewed it for a second season and the talk was that it was due to the photo scandal. There were also rumors that Jennette started feuding with Ariana and Nickelodeon around the time the pictures went public which resulted in her boycotting the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. She explained her absence via a tweet, “It has to do with how Nickelodeon treated me, that’s all,” but she didn’t really explain exactly what happened. She also posted, “I chose to not go because sticking up for what is right and what is fair is what my mom taught me is ALWAYS the most important thing.”
A Nickelodeon official responded by saying Jennette’s picture scandal had nothing to do with any problem between her and Nickelodeon. “The photos caused no issues between McCurdy and the network and we have the utmost respect for her,” the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, TMZ reported that Jennette’s problem with Nickelodeon was about money “We’re told the pint-sized star is pissed that Grande makes way more money than her and she’s been trying to renegotiate her deal.” Ultimately, Nickelodeon cancelled the series with the final episode airing on July 17, 2014. The speculation was that the grueling, 40-episode shoot had been taxing on everyone and the two leads felt they both worked at kids-focused Nickelodeon long enough and were ready to move on to adulthood.
CAN I SEE JENNETTE MCCURDY NAKED SOMEWHERE?
You sure can, in the magazine with the most disappointing and misleading title ever. Jennette appeared in Naked Magazine or NKD’s February 2014 issue in a photospread and interview in which she appeared FULLY CLOTHED and frankly, not just completely covered but dressed in rather conservative clothes. That’s because Naked Magazine is not what you think it is. The self-described “storytellers” state that they reveal who the celebrity really is when you “take someone out of the stage lights.” They show fans, “The person behind it all – one’s raw self. They are completely naked.”
Since people who want to see Jennette McCurdy nude really don’t care much for metaphors, this kind of claim isn’t really comforting. However, if you are interested in seeing Jennette’s naked insides instead of her nude outsides, here’s the Naked Magazine interview with Jennette that starts on page 37. And if you want to just see her clothed outsides and fantasize about what would be if Naked Magazine literally lived up to its name, here are just the photos.
WHAT IS JENETTE MCCURDY DOING IN LIFE AFTER NICKELODEON?
Besides being an active social media participant, Jennette is focusing on being a writer which is something she has always done ever since she was a child. She says, “My dream is to be on a writing staff for a sitcom. To sit in a room with a lot of well-rounded, funny people and just talk about things.” She carries a notebook in which she jots down jokes as they come to her such as “Why do people always brag about being in lots of relationships? Congratulations on being unsuccessful.” Jennette also studies her craft by attending several comedy shows each week. She said, “My friends tell me I don’t laugh,” but explains, “Not because I don’t think it’s funny! I just sit there analyzing the material.” As Jennette grows out of being a child star, her web career and presence also grows; currently she has over 6 million Twitter followers and around 15 million likes on Facebook.
Not naked but in a bikini:
In addition to sitcom pilots, she writes for several online publications such as a monthly pop culture essay for the Wall Street Journal and a weekly romance column for Seventeen. When her mother and best friend, Debra McCurdy, died in 2013 after a 17 year battle with breast cancer, Jennette wrote a touching story in the Wall Street Journal about her loss, “To get through it, I lived in sitcom-land,” she says. “I thought, these people go through tragedy and are able to make light of it. It was what I had to do to survive.” Jennette even wrote an article for the Wall St. Journal about her experience in meeting Andre Drummond through social media and “how social networking can be like a little scrapbook for your personal life” in which snapshots can be framed nicely “with cute little borders that we can show off to our friends and be proud of.” Jennette forgot to add that you should also make it clear to the person you are dating about which snapshots are allowed to go into the social media scrapbook.
