Family Sued Over Barking Dog Could Lose Their Home

I’m going to go ahead and file this weird news story under “people and their fucking dogs.”  Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs; had a dog growing up and the thing barked like a son of a bitch, but I loved him.

However, much like passing gas, nobody ever seems to mind the sound of their own dog barking. For a family in the Seattle area, their refusal or inability to curb their dog’s yapping is going to come back to bite them in the ass to the tune of $500,000 and possibly put them out on the street.

That’s because when Woodrow Thompson, the neighbor of Denise Norton complained that her dog Cawper would not stop barking, claiming that it was “raucously, wildly bellowing, howling and explosively barking” she ignored him. Even when Thompson filed a lawsuit stating that the dog’s barking was causing him “profound emotional distress” she didn’t believe that the lawsuit was real.

Has No Idea What’s Going On

In the lawsuit Thompson alleges that Cawper the dog barks at 128 decibels.128 decibels is on par with a chainsaw or an ambulance siren. According to the Labor Department it is not safe to be exposed to louder than 115 decibels for more than 15 min. a day. However Norton thought his claims were so ridiculous regarding how loud the dog is that she continued to ignore the court papers.

Super Responsible Home And Pet Owners

“In my head, everything was so bogus that he’d been doing, I don’t know why, I just didn’t think it was real or something.” By failing to respond to the lawsuit her neighbor won the judgment for a $500K lien on her house.

“The sheriff comes, puts the papers on the garage and the wall and everything and saying they were going to put the house up for sale.”

Now Norton and her family are trying to reverse the judgment against them before they lose their home. Instead of you know, making sure the dog is quite or getting it trained, or getting rid of the dog that might make them homeless.

For anyone who has had to deal with a neighbor’s dog that wouldn’t stop barking, is this justice? Or is this way too harsh a punishment? After all the main reason that they may lose their home is because they failed to respond to the lawsuit.

What’s the worst neighbor – dog story that you have experienced?
