China doesn't take the over-use of the internet lightly. The country says that they're in the middle of an internet epidemic and have started boot camps and psychological testing to make sure that children and teenagers don't use the internet more than necessary. Unfortunately for one 19-Year-Old claiming to be addicted to the internet, they decided to take curing themselves into their own hands.
One night, the teenager's mom went to his room and found a note. It read, "Mum, I have gone to the hospital for a while. Don't worry. I will definitely come back this evening." That's when the mom realized a cutting knife was missing from a kitchen drawer. At that time, the boy had gone to an isolated area nearby his home, sat on a bench, and used the knife to completely (and succesfully) sever his left hand.
Bloodied, the boy then called for a taxi and went to the hospital, leaving the severed hand behind. Local news in China showed footage of the bloodied bench where the teenager commited the act to himself.
Luckily the police found the boy's hand lying on the ground and brought it to the hospital where surgeons were able to reattach it. It's unclear how operable the hand will be once it has fully healed, but they expect the teen to be able to use it to some extent. Your move, Chinese Government.
A Military Psychologist who works with children and teens addicted to the internet in Beijing said "I heard about the young man who chopped off his hand. But I fear he will become addicted again."
